Romeo Diaz, pictured here, is a seaweed farmer from Sibolo, Caluya Islands in Antique province. This area was also hit by supertyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Some islands here even have barely any houses standing but even worse for the locals, lots of the seaweed crops vanished during the typhoon. As this is their main livelihood it’s a big problem for the community. Thanks to your kind donations and together with Operation Seaweed Caluya we’ve managed to distribute seaweed farming materials, some building supplies and medicines to this area. You may send an email at pakisama.natl@yahoo.com if you want to further support our relief efforts. You may also donate via PayPal.

The Caluya islands in the Philippines are home to over 4000 seaweed farmers. Seaweed farming is one of the most important livelihoods on these islands. It’s proven to be far more sustainable than fishing and provides a better income. Bessie, a seaweed farmer from Caluya talks about her life and struggles as a Tambalang (seaweed in local dialect) farmer.
